1st squad CO A on bank of Rhine River. Smoke screen pots in river to cover our work parties building a ponton bridge. It was one of the longest ever built. We needed all the trucks available to carry the inflated pontons from the assembly area to the Rhine River under cover of darkness. We used the Black division and all of their trucks. Glad it was at night because the German 88s were shelling the area... When the shells got to close the drivers stopped and all ran for the ditches for cover. We lost a bunch of trucks that night.
