| Comments: | My father served on the USS Arthur Middleton during World War II, 1942 to 1945. He was in the US Coast Guard. He was one of the head cooks who provided the last meals for the US Marines before they hit the beaches. He told many stories of the young brave soldiers who they transported from island to island. He was not a Marine, just a service man serving his country during a time of war. He got home safe but passed away a few years ago at 80. Anyone remember old "cookie', he was Tony Pallija, sr. From Barberton, Ohio. thanks, tony jr. |

| Comments: | : Hi: My father was a member of the 540th Combat Engineers WWII. I have created a website that is dedicated to him and his fellow VI Corps Engineers (the 36th, 39th and 540th). Dad and his fellow engineers were generally part of VI Corps and attached to the 5th and 7th Armies too. Saw action from North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Southern France, Central Europe including the Ardennes/Alsace and Germany. I am looking of course for members of the above, but also collecting ANY stories/history from combat engineers who served in WWII. If you have a story you would like to contribute, please contact me. I would love to add your page to our site. We also have a guestbook and a forum. So please stop by and post your info. I have an extensive listing of links including engineer sites and many links for research. I have helped several people find info on their units or have been able to put them in contact with old members. Sincerely, Marion Chard Proud daughter of Walter (Monday) Poniedzialek 540th Combat Engineer WWII http://www.6thcorpscombatengineers.com |

| Comments: | I am a Mississippi national guardsman serving in the 150th Engineer Battalion. I have been Platoon leader,Company executive officer and currently the Assistant Brigade Engineer. I've been in this battalion for four years and have always known about the galliant efforts of our brothers at the Rhine and Seigfried Line but had never visited this website. I only pray that if ever we must answer the call of this nation we too, fight with that same spirit and dedication. ESSAYONS! |

| Comments: | Excellent website. Perhaps you'd enjoy reading ours. Please check out www.georgethomasclark.com -- the author's official web page, which features information about his biographical novel HITLER HERE. This work is unique because all the characters have bylines and thus the opportunity to reveal what they did and how they felt during an era of unprecedented destruction. The online excerpts are from the points-of-view of Hitler and six other characters. At the recent Frankfurt Book Fair, HITLER HERE generated reading copy requests from several foreign publishers, and the English language rights in India have just been sold to Mastermind Books. | Comments: | My uncle, Vincent L. Costello, of the Mattapan section of Boston, Massachusetts, was a member of the 150th Combat Engineers, Company B, First Squad. He won the Bronze Star for volunteering to place a bridge section across the Sarre River, Dec. 8, 1944, as is reported on his citation. I am confused by the Dec. 10, 1944 date on your site. He is not listed on your Bronze Star recipient list. He actually got the Bronze Star via GO 95 HQ XII Corps 23July1945. After reading the citation I cannot imagine what it takes to get the Congressional Medal Of Honor. Uncle Vinnie never talked about any of his military experiences. Also, when he returned home in 1949, after a second tour of duty, he could not deal with certain holidays, i.e., VE Day, Fourth of July, Armistice Day (now Veterans Day) but especially Memorial Day. Today we have help for those with what we have come to know as Post Traumatic Stress. Uncle Vinnie never complained. It seems he could do anything. He worked as a crane operator for several years adn then became a U.S. Postal operations employee. Vinnie was shy, quiet and a spiritual man. He was a person of ultimate integrity. He died July 10, 1973 of cardiac failure, at my mother's home, a result of having both of his heart valves replaced in experimental cardio-vascular surgery many years earlier. I have started doing a family geneaology and came across Uncle Vin's Bronze Star and his citation. Thus, the search about the Sarre River was on. Google Search brought me to the Sarre River item that brought me directly to your web site. And, what a fantastic site it is. I also have a note that he wrote home to my aunt, his sister, in which he writes a rather uplifting memo in October 30, 1944. He even asked about me. Imagine being upbeat during the conditions that the 150th was enduring in that time period. I found him in the Battalion Photo. He is the last man on the right side of the last row. He carried a picture of my mother with him throughout the war. While guarding some German POWs, of considerable importance, a German officer thanked my uncle by painting a picture of my mother. The German officer used his own silk shirt as a canvas. The artist got everything correct, except my mother's eye color, blue, that he painted brown. Rather good from a black and white very small photo. My uncle brought the painting home with him. It is quite remarkable. The shirt's button holes are still present. Upon his return home in 1949, he had a friend with him, a guy named Rocky Marciano, from Brockton, Massachusetts-yes, the very same Rocky Marciano that became the Heavy Weight Boxing Champion. Rocky complained that Uncle Vin knocked him around too much. They were pals. They got very drunk that night celebrating being home on American soil. If anyone in the 150th, from Feb. 1943 - Nov. 1945, knew of him, I would like to hear from you. Thanks for a terrific web site. Ron Costello |

He's buried in Luxembourg. My aunt says he had crossed the Rhine. If anyone knew a Richard Power from Boston, Massachusetts, who shipped out of Dix around 1 Jan 1945, please contact me. I would like to know more about him. My uncle was married and had one son. Semper fi, hooah, and a huge thank you to all vets, especially who served in a war. I will never forget your service. |

| Comments: | I enjoyed your website very much, and have visited it often. My grandfather (Lt. Col. Adrian Horace Williams) was involved with the Rhine River Crossing. I have many of his medals and ceritificates, as well as a portfolio titled, "The Rhine Crossing - 12th Army Group Engineer Operations" by Brigadier General P.H. Timothy. This portfolio is stamped RESTRICTED in red (however by now of course it is most likely declassified). He was with the 258th Engineering Combat Battalion. He trained with Navy LCM's and LCVP's on Prince Albert Canal. One of my grandfather's hadwritten comments in the page margins told of the freezing weather posing anticipated problems to the naval craft (since Navy equipment was designed for use in salt water), the 258th Engineers initiated help to the Ninth Army by wrapping chemical heating pads around the motors. He also wrote that the Baily-bridge equipment under camouflage nets at Sevelen, Germany were "Poor camouflage!" |

| Comments: | Hi Rick, This is Benoit, do you remember me ? I sent you a couple of pictures from the Sarre River 5 years ago. Well, today is D-Day ! I just wanted to say on your website how important this celebration has been in France, especially today, 60 years after the OverLord operation. All peoples from Europe are so grateful to all these soldiers who fought and died for our freedom. Many celebrations have taken place in Normandy for a few days, especially in Sainte-Mère-Eglise, Arromanche and in Colleville Cemetery, near Omaha Beach. I just heard our president Chirac saying today : "France will never forget what America did for us" ; and I will always remember that your father was directly involved in my father's liberation on December 8th, 1944 in Sarreinsming! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Benoit. |

| Comments: | He was in the 99th Infantry Division and was in the first draft in May 1941. He was just a farm boy. He earned a 'battlefield commission' and of course was wounded. Came back, raised a great family and happily married for over 60s years. |
A Tribute to George. Battle of the Bulge Veteran George L. Dresdow, Wisconsin Rapids Wisconsin passed away Feb 5, 2004 "Live on your Memories" were my brother's words of consolement to me after our Father passed away in 1986 at the age of 96. How fortunate we are to have that many wonderful years. My brother George, 6 1/2 years older than me, relished teasing his kid sister. He would say that I had a big mouth and would go get the yardstick to measure my mouth! I would say 'well' and he would say, "How many wells make a river...52 and a fool like you". We would argue over getting the crust of Mother's homemade bread, or having the silver knife that rattled to spread the butter on the bread. "It is your turn to haul in the wood" or "It is your turn to do the dishes". I would chase him with the broom and he would throw water on me. We had lots of bats flying around at night and he would tell me to watch out for they would get in my hair. Mother said, we could not get along with each other nor could we get along without each other. One of the things I remember best was I called him a SOB and he told Mother. I had no idea what I had called him but learned well from that. Dad used to plant cucumbers by the half acre and King, our German Shpherd dog would nip George on the butt while he was bending down to pick the cucumbers, George would rise up and shake his fist at King and when George bent down again King would run by and do more nipping, What a fun thing to remember. We taught King to play 'hide and seek' and George hid and layed flat on the milk house roof. King went around and around sniffing the ground and finally looked and saw George. I shall never forget the happy dog and George's kindness to animals. There are so many more memories to share, such as he grew older, we had to stop calling him 'Sonny' and call him George. Our sister Myrtle called him Sonny at a teenage social event and he refused to answer her! How we worried about him when he was called into the army before World War II began. We were all so happy when he married Marion. He had never really been interested in girls and I never knew him to even date before Marion. What a wonderful wife she has been to him and they raised the most beautiful family together. They all gave our Mother and Father such happiness. Mother sat up in bed the exact time George was wounded in the "Battle of the Bulge" and told Dad that George had been wounded. George said he knew at that time that Mother knew! George did receive a Battle Field Commision for his bravery He was a real soldier on earth! On one of my last visits with George in his home, he told me that if he came back from the War that he made a promise that he would be a "soldier for Christ" This is a tribute from Georges sister Ethel Dresdow Christensen Anchorage Alaska |
